Hi Reader, Happy new year! On January 1st, 2026, I officially stepped down from my senior teacher position. The result? A $2,000 monthly pay cut. And honestly, when I first made this decision, I felt kinda diminished as a person For years, I had unknowingly tied my identity to that title. When it changed, something inside me shifted uncomfortably. It was a humbling moment that forced me to confront a question I thought I’d already answered: Where is my identity truly anchored? The Identity ResetThis experience reminded me of something fundamental: my identity cannot be built on job titles, salaries, or status. As Christians, we’re called to anchor our identity in the gospel. When God the Father spoke over Jesus at His baptism, He said, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.” (Matthew 3:17) Because we are in Christ, that belovedness is ours too. We are not defined by what people see us as or what our business cards say. We are defined by whose we are. The Practical RealityLet me be honest—I’m only four days into this change as I write this. Not much has materially shifted yet, but the financial adjustment is real. My wife and I are reevaluating our budget, scaling down lifestyle expenses, and making more intentional decisions about our spending. Why do this? Because stepping down has created space for what I believe God is calling me to:
The Countercultural PathHere’s what I’m learning: sometimes being in the center of God’s will means what the world calls “downward mobility.” We live in a culture obsessed with climbing ladders, increasing salaries, and accumulating titles. But different life stages call for different postures. Sometimes faithfulness looks like scaling down. Sometimes obedience looks like stepping back. Sometimes God’s best for us involves less, not more. This isn’t about romanticizing poverty or pretending financial decisions don’t matter. They do. It’s about recognizing that our calling isn’t always found in the next promotion—sometimes it’s found in the intentional choice to create margin for what truly matters. Your Invitation for 2026As we step into this new year, I want to invite you to reflect on your own vocation: Where is your identity anchored? Is it in your job title, your salary, your professional achievements? Or is it rooted in who God says you are? What might faithfulness require of you this year? For some, it might mean pursuing that promotion with excellence. For others, it might mean stepping back to create space for family, studies, ministry, or rest. Are you willing to embrace downward mobility if that’s where God is leading? Not every season is about climbing. Sometimes the most spiritually mature decision is to descend—to let go of status, to embrace smaller, to choose less so you can focus on what matters most. My $2,000 pay cut isn’t a sacrifice I’m making begrudgingly. It’s an intentional choice to align my life more closely with my calling. It’s uncomfortable, yes. It requires adjustment, absolutely. But I’m convinced it’s where I’m meant to be right now. The question for you isn’t whether you should take a pay cut (that’s between you and God). The question is: Are you willing to let your vocation—your calling—shape your decisions more than society’s expectations do? As we navigate 2026 together, let’s anchor ourselves not in titles or salaries, but in the unchanging truth of whose we are. From that secure foundation, we can make the countercultural, sometimes costly, always worthwhile decisions that align our lives with God’s calling. Here’s to a year of intentional living, identity grounded in the gospel, and the courage to embrace whatever path—upward or downward—God is calling us to walk. P.S.
